MY work as editor has been very simple. I have left Professor Wilson's translation unaltered except where there was an obvious slip, or where Sayana's Commentary had not been followed. It is now nearly thirty years since Professor Wilson finished his trans lation. The progress of Sanskrit scholarship may therefore perhaps be thought to have lessened the value of his work. I have endeavoured to meet this criticism by embodying in my notes (which are distinguished from those of Professor Wilson by being enclosed in square brackets) some of the results of modern German scholarship.
